Because the Planet can’t wait,
“Nevertheless She Persisted”
MEET NANCY SKINNER
Get to know the woman behind the Sustainability movement, her life, what she stands for, and what her plans are for our country!
Nancy has been working on building economically stronger, sustainable communities, that preserve the environment, create jobs now, and honor our generational commitment to the next generation to the same pursuit of life, liberty and happiness that we’ve enjoyed.
Nancy was in charge of all the Financial work of renovating the Fox Theatre for the Ilitch’s. I served on the Board of Grand Circus Park Renovation (and was living in the D in the late 80’s), way before it became hip.
Nancy received a Presidential Award for my Sustainability work (specifically rebuilding two flooded towns off the floodplain and rebuilt a models of sustainability) in 1993, after the Great Mid-Western Floods with the help of a mid-level DOE Employee, Bill Becker, who went on to become Obama’s Executive Director of “The Presidents Climate Action Plan.” We organized a public-private working group, with 10 ten federal agencies involved in disaster relief and a private “Dream Team” of the nations leading Sustainable Architects and Engineers.

Nancy helped launch the “Chicago Climate Exchange”, the nation’s first Cap and Trade Exchange in 1997, with former Chicago Board of Trade president, Richard Sandor.
After her activism and my work on market-based solutions to climate change, Nancy decided that it was the public opinion being manipulated by a well-funded PR campaign by Big Oil, which funded a handful of scientists to undermine the overwhelming consensus on climate change, as set out by the UN’s IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). So, with no training or radio experience, Nancy managed to land a show on WLS, the third-largest Talk Radio station in the US.
Nancy was the first Democratic radio host, doing a weekend show on an otherwise all-conservative station in 1997. In 2000, she co-hosted a nationally syndicated morning show on 465 stations where I covered the 9-11 tragedy live for 7 hours, the Clinton impeachment, Bush vs. Gore (and was published the day after the Supreme Court Ruling in a lengthy op-ed in the Chicago Tribune). 1997-2003.

After years in activism, market mechanisms & media, Nancy decided that she needed to actually run for office to make a difference on Climate policy. In 2004 a US Senate in Illinois, where she was a Host on WLS for 8 years was opened after the retirement of Peter Fitzgerald.
Nancy threw my hat in the race for the US Senate Democratic Primary in 2004, announcing it on her show
A pollster told Nancy there were four men in the race at the time. She ended up in a seven-way race with an unknown state senator named Barack Obama who ran on healthcare. Another strong candidate, Blair Hull, spent $32 million in that primary. Mayor Daley had his former Chief of Staff, Gary Chico, running and the long-time Secretary of State’s son, Dan Hines, who was also the state’s Comptroller, made Hines an early favorite.
Nancy pollsters told her before he got in they polled Obama’s name and he had zero chance of winning. Ha! They got along great on the trail, as they both opposed the war in Iraq and shared much in the way of progressive values. But, in the end, Nancy lost to POTUS (something she considers a Badge of Honor.)
(Love this one: The State Fair Governor’s Day in Springfield IL, is the kickoff of all Senate races. This day was near 100 degrees. It shows).
Nancy began her TV career in 1999 and spent 12 years on all cable networks (CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News and Fox Business Network) as not only a guest, but as a fill-in host for a number of shows. In this capacity Nancy debated the top names in politics on all the issues, Domestic and Foreign Policy, which gives her deep roots on all the issues a Member of Congress would need, as opposed to a single area of work, which most first time Congressional Candidates have.

After a year as a morning drive host back on my hometown, Royal Oak, a suburb of Detroit, Nancy Skinner Live, 1310 AM, Detroit’s Progressive Talk, was the show where leaders from all sides were heard on all the issues across the spectrum, Nancy decided that her 14 yr. Republican Incumbent was vulnerable in 2006. Despite Knollenberg’s $4 million war chest, and almost all political observers and media, that Skinner had no chance. Nancy raised $465,000.
Senator Obama came to Michigan and included this “hearty endorsement” of Nancy, who he said was “one of my sharpest opponents”.

With only two new-comers men to politics, who were not addressing environmental issues, or climate change, Nancy entered the race late at the urging of her progressive base.
By now, Nancy had been focused nationally on Climate Change Communications and had connected with the most prominent climate scientists and the global climate community at larger. Once again, she ran on the issue of climate change (that made third time). READ
After Nancy lost in what was essentially a three-way tie, Nancy jumped right back into Climate Action. She led a Detroit Bus to the People’s Climate March in NYC in September 2014. Nancy has students from almost all MI Universities (mostly grad students) who were going into the field of sustainability, as well as ordinary concerned citizens who wanted to protest at the UN’s Meeting on Climate Change.
The People’s Climate March Drew 400,000 people. By comparison, the March on the Mall for Civil Rights was 250,000, yet news coverage of the March was nominal, even as sister marches took place across the planet.
NANCY LED THE “D” BUS TO THE PEOPLE’S CLIMATE MARCH IN NYC IN 2014
Distressed by the lack of media coverage about the biggest problem facing humanity, Climate Change, Nancy decided to use her Radio and TV background and launched Climate Talk Radio. She recruited a bi-partisan all-star lineup of show contributors, Climate Scientists; Michael Mann, Jason Box, (Evangelical Climate Scientist, Katherine Hayhoe), Activists; Bill McKibben (350.org Founder), Joe Romm (Climate Progress Founder), Former Republican Congressman, Bob Inglis SC (who was primaried out for accepting climate science) & Market Leaders, including Richard Sandor (founder of Chicago Climate Exchange and now a global Cap and Trade Expert. She rolled out Climate Talk Radio at the People’s Climate March in NYC, interviewing people from across the country and globe as to why they had come so far and how they were working to bring attention and solutions to Climate Change.

Nancy was trained personally by Al Gore in Rio De Janeiro in 2014 as a Member of his Climate Reality Leadership Corp, where she now presents his Inconvenient Truth Slideshow, including the Sequel Update that includes all the amazing technological developments, astonishing costs reductions in renewables, and provides #ClimateHope that Businesses, states, cities, Wall Street and Academia are leading the way despite the Climate-denying President Trump.
NANCY IS A FEATURED CLIMATE LEADER ON CLIMATE REALITY’S WEBSITE.
Nancy developed an enormous global network of Climate Leaders in Business, Government, Academia among others, on Linked-IN. The issue of Climate Finance has always been at the heart of Nancy’s global solution to decarbonize economies and reach the 2 Degree C limit set at the Paris Agreement.
NANCY’S PLAN TO TAX GLOBAL CUREENCY TRADES WITH A TINY .05% TAX, WHICH RESULTS IN A $7 TRILLION ANNUAL FUND, AND CAN BE DONE BY PRIVATE BANKING AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS (WITHOUT CONGRESS OR GOVERNMENTS WHO HAVE FAILED TO LIVE UP TO COMMITMENTS TO CONTRIUTE TO A PAULTRY GREEN CLIMATE FUND), HAS RECEIVED MUCH ATTENTION BY THE CLIMATE FINANCE COMMUNITY WORLDWIDE.
Education & Job Qualifications
She attended Guardian Angels in Clawson (better known as GA, for Elementary School, Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights. (Go Ventures!)
Nancy went to the University of Michigan, and as a Freshman, was thrilled to be placed in South Quad (the football – and less than frilly dorm), as Nancy’s Dad, Coach Chuck Skinner was a Hall of Fame Michigan High School Football Coach (22 years at Hazel Park and 12 years at Birmingham Seaholm), and her mother was equally as football crazy.
Nancy never missed a game at the Big House. She actually lived on the same floor as Jim Harbaugh (Bush/Gomberg) and has lifelong friends (her Big Chill gang), to this day (including her ex-husband she met on her first day in Squad) and the best memories ever of being a Wolverine!
Nancy was accepted to the Ross School of Business at the University and graduated with a BBA, with majors in Finance and Accounting. (Go Blue!)
Disclaimer: Nancy has three brothers who went to Michigan State, another played football at Albion, her Father got his Masters at U of M, but graduated from, and played football, at Eastern Michigan, so college loyalties “are complicated”, and Nancy roots for every school that isn’t playing against the Big Blue (except Ohio State)- sorry…
